CINCINNATI- All For One Club member Jim Aranda is a Xavier graduate and was a member of the 1964-68 men’s golf team. Aranda wasn’t your typical Xavier student-athlete. His coach Ray Baldwin designated him as a “player coach” giving Aranda the responsibility to make the schedule, handle the details when the team traveled as well as other duties as assigned. Jim says he had a wonderful experience with some of his teammates including Roger Ruhl, Paul Lalonde, Greg Lalonde, and Terry Adams.
Aranda admits, “The program was nothing like what we have today, but still fun.”
Now working as a lawyer in Lancaster, Ohio, Aranda says being a student-athlete influenced his life and career in many positive ways such as:
- Being competitive and doing his best always
- Being honest and playing by the rules
- Being a good teammate and a good competitor, having sportsmanship, and acting graceful in defeat.
All these qualities that golf taught him he says, was great training for his future as a lawyer.
Jim expresses his gratitude toward the All For One Club and the different ways the club allows others to give to the various athletic programs. Much like Jim’s time on the Xavier golf team, he too would like current and future student-athletes to have a positive growth experience like he did. “Whether in the classroom or on the golf course, we want them to develop and grow as a whole.”
