Giving Back To the Community

As part of their education, in keeping with the Jesuit motto of "men and women for others," all Xavier student-athletes are expected to participate in several community service projects throughout the year. Each XU athletic team is required to participate in at least one community service project per semester.

Each team is responsible for choosing its own project in which to take part. In recent years, the work of the Xavier athletes has benefited, among others, Habitat for Humanity, Race for a Cure, Cincinnati Children's Hospital, The Red Cross, the Drop Inn Center and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. In addition, each year teams deliver Thanksgiving meals and Christmas gifts to local families. There are also several department-wide community service projects that all teams contribute to, including Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods and the Fill-A-Truck event at basketball games that collects clothing, food and cash for the Neediest Kids of All charity.

Through the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, Xavier student-athletes work a booth each spring at STYUKA, an annual Xavier festival, to raise money for various local charities. Xavier student-athletes also regularly visit area retirement homes and elementary schools.
