Athletic Director Mike Bobinski Earns NACDA Division I Northeast AD Of The Year Award

DALLAS, TX -- The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced the winners of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award (ADOY) today, including Xavier University Associate Vice President and Athletic Director Mike Bobinski. Bobinski was named as the Division I Northeast AD of the Year. The awards will be presented during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, June 27 at NACDA's 47th Annual Convention being held this week in Dallas, Texas.

"I appreciate being recognized with this Under Armor AD of the Year Award," said Bobinski. "This award really highlights the talent, hard work and commitment of our entire Xavier athletic family, including the student-athletes, coaches and staff that I've had the privilege to work with. It also reflects the tremendous support Xavier athletics receives from (Xavier President) Fr. Michael Graham, (Vice President) John Kucia and the rest of the Xavier community."

NACDA has four geographic regions - northeast, southeast, central and west; while the membership is separated into seven categories - Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A); Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA); Division I (formerly Division I-AAA); Division II; Division III; NAIA; and Junior/Community Colleges, along with one International winner. NACDA Executive Director Bob Vecchione explains the ADOY Award is essential because it highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding communities.

"Before its inception, our Honors and Awards Committee recognized a need for an award such as the AD of the Year," said Vecchione, who is finishing his first year at the helm of NACDA. "The program brings to light the remarkable jobs done by athletics directors across the country. These 29 outstanding winners epitomize that, providing us with a group of exemplary athletics directors who excel on campus and in their communities."

Bobinski, the current Chair of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Committee, is completing his 12th year as Xavier's Director for Athletics, coming off another year that was filled with tremendous accomplishments and progress for Xavier's broad-based athletic program of 18 NCAA Division I sports.

Bobinski's passion for success has rubbed off on the Xavier athletic program and it has shown up in impressive results in competition and in the classroom. During Bobinski's tenure as athletic director, nine Xavier teams have earned 40 team or individual spots in NCAA Championship competition, including the baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, rifle, men's tennis, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball teams. In addition, Xavier has sent individual standouts to NCAA Championship competition in track and field. In the same time span, Xavier teams have captured 25 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships.

In men's basketball, Xavier has averaged 25 wins over Bobinski's 12 years while making at least the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 four out of the last five years. XU made the 2004 and 2008 Elite Eight. In addition, men's basketball has extended its streak to 88 straight seniors that have graduated. Women's basketball made runs to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2001 and again in 2010 and in 2011 achieved its highest national ranking in program history at No. 4.

Xavier's academic success has also been impressive. Xavier's latest graduation success rate is at 95 percent. XU had 102 student-athletes honored on the Atlantic 10 Conference Academic Honor Roll in the fall of 2011. The 2012 NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) shows that Xavier student-athletes have continued their success in the classroom, including the fact that six of Xavier's NCAA Division I athletic teams have been recognized for earning multiyear APR in the top 10 percent of all squads nationally in each sport: men's tennis, women's golf, women's tennis, indoor track, outdoor track and volleyball.
