May 2, 2007

CINCINNATI - Along with eight Xavier athletic programs being recognized with Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for academic performance, 11 of the 18 Xavier teams ranked in the 80th percentile or better in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) standings.  The APR is a term-by-term measurement of academic progress for every student-athlete in Division I athletics.  An impressive 17 of XU's 18 teams scored better than the NCAA average for their respective sport, showing Xavier's excellence both in the classroom and in competition.

Men's swimming, women's cross country, women's tennis, and women's indoor and outdoor track all scored perfect 1,000 APR ratings.  Men's cross country (993), men's golf (990), men's tennis (990), men's indoor (990) and outdoor track (990), women's swimming (989), women's golf (986), women's soccer (985), baseball (978), and men's basketball (976) all scored above an APR of 975.

Six Xavier teams scored in the 90-100th percentile, including baseball, men's swimming, men's indoor track, women's cross country, and women's indoor and outdoor track.

Five programs scored in the 80-90th percentile: men's basketball, men's cross country, men's tennis, men's outdoor track, and women's tennis.

Men's basketball scored the highest above the NCAA average of any team, scoring nearly 50 points higher than the average for all 333 NCAA basketball programs.  Only 35 of the 333 Division I basketball programs scored better than Xavier, as the Musketeers performed better than programs like UCLA, Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan State, Stanford and Vanderbilt.  Locally, XU also outperformed Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami (OH), Ohio and Ohio State.
