CINCINNATI - On Saturday, over 150 Xavier student-athletes were recognized for their achievements in the classroom, service to the community and leadership skills at the annual Student-Athlete All Honors Day Ceremony. This ceremony is part of the larger campus-wide All Honors Day that celebrates the many ways in which Xavier's students excel.
Student-athletes were given awards based on their cumulative grade point averages and the Bob & Linda Kohlhepp Top Team Scholar Award was presented to the student-athlete on each team with the highest cumulative GPA. Awards were also presented to the team with the highest overall team GPA for the Spring 2012 and Fall 2012 semesters. Both awards were presented to the women's golf team for earning a 3.67 in the spring and a record breaking 3.82 in the fall.
As community service is an integral part of Xavier's mission, the Community Service Award was presented to Anne Frigo, a senior member of the women's swimming team and Jeff Robinson, a senior member of the men's basketball team. Both of these student-athletes were recognized for embodying the Jesuit philosophy of men and women for others and have demonstrated service to others during their four years at Xavier.
The program concludes each year with the presentation of the Thomas E. Sedler Award and the Rev. Paul L O'Conner S.J. Award. The Sedler Award goes to a male and female senior student-athlete who has demonstrated hard work and enthusiasm during their career at Xavier. The 2013 Sedler Award winners were Luke Spencer, a senior member of the men's soccer team and Breanna Patz, a senior member of the women's golf team.
The O'Connor Award is an award named after Xavier University's 29th President that is given to a senior male and female student-athlete who best exemplifies the ideal of Xavier University based upon academic and athletic excellence. This year, the Athletic Department and the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services Office were proud to present this top award to senior women's volleyball player, Stephanie Vorherr, and senior men's soccer player, Sean Ryan.
The Student-Athlete Honors Day Ceremony is an opportunity, within the campus community, to honor and celebrate the impressive accomplishments of Xavier's scholar-athletes. This is in addition to the following academic honors that were also awarded to individual teams this past year; men's and women's swimming were recognized as CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams (2012), men's and women's soccer was recognized as NSCAA Scholar All-America Teams (2012) and five women's golf team members were named NGCA Scholar All-Americans this past year, a Xavier record.
