CINCINNATI - Xavier student-athletes spent time in April tutoring elementary students at their adopted school, the Academy of World Languages. The Xavier student-athletes worked with the children in preparation for the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Achievement Tests, which occur at the end of the month.
The ODE Achievement Tests evaluate students from grades 3 - 8 in the subjects of reading, mathematics, science and social studies. The student-athletes enjoyed tutoring the students in a variety of subjects and helping reaffirm their scholastic competencies prior to the test.
Onya Edwards, a first-year member of the varsity track and field team helped organize the Xavier student-athletes for tutoring sessions. "Having the opportunity to work with the children and make a positive impression on youth, always gives me satisfaction," Edwards said. "Anything I can do to help the community genuinely warms my heart, and working with the fantastic kids at AWL does just that."
